How to Parent Your Parents

The sandwich generation has to be one of the most stressed generations. I currently have my mother living with me and it has been quite an adjustment. I have found that the best way to deal with this adjustment has been to 1) Don't sweat the small stuff 2) Look at the positives that it brings versus what you are giving up 3) Be concious of the impact to your partner In my situation, my mother helps out with our two children. While things around the house may not be to my preference, I choose to overlook the little things and focus on the positive that my children are not in aftercare or daycare and instead are able to spend time with their grandmother who loves them dearly. I try to also be aware that my husband is a saint because it is hard to give up some of your privacy. Sometimes there are some gives and takes. Coming to a position of understanding and open communication has been important.
